What Is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the gradual loss of dopamine-producing cells from a region of the brain called the substantia nigra.

As dopamine levels decline, the brain becomes less able to regulate muscle movement throughout the body – resulting in problems like shakiness, rigidity, instability, slowness of movement, and difficulty walking.

In the later stages of the disease, brain function is also affected, which can lead to depression and even dementia.

How Can Stem Cell Therapy Help?

Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) are a unique, naturally occurring type of stem cell shown to potentially help improve impaired motor function caused by PD. 

MSCs are also known to have anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties that could help protect surviving neurons from further harm. 

Finally, MSCs possess regenerative properties that could help re-elevate dopamine levels in the brain.

While this doesn’t represent a potential cure for PD, it does present a potential avenue for alleviating symptoms and further maintaining the quality of life.
