Arthritis Stem Cell Therapy
Learn About Arthritis & Celltex Stem Cell Therapy
Arthritis is often thought of as a single disease, but the term encompasses a range of joint pain and joint disease. Learn about how Celltex is helping to improve the quality of life of individuals suffering from arthritis by using their own stem cells.
Condition Overview
What Is Arthritis?
In all, there are over 100 types of arthritis and related conditions. Common symptoms of arthritis include swelling, pain, stiffness and decreased range of motion. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and can limit a person’s ability to perform daily tasks and activities. Regrowing cartilage has been difficult in the past, so most treatments have focused on relieving symptoms and improving joint function.
Arthritis can have a visible impact on the joints, such as causing knobby fingers, but some forms can also affect internal organs, such as the heart, lungs and kidneys. Imaging tests such as X-rays, CT and MRI scans, and ultrasound can effectively detect arthritis.
Stem Cell Therapy Research
How Can Celltex Stem Cell Therapy Help?
Several studies have shown that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can modulate the inflammatory processes through secretion of numerous anti-inflammatory factors, activation of endogenous cells and production of T-regulatory cells.
While some improvements have been reported following administration of MSCs in animal models of arthritis, the mechanism of action is not completely understood. Progress from work in animal models has motivated the initiation of dozens of clinical studies to assess the therapeutic potential of stem cells in the treatment of both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
Transplantation of MSCs in humans for a variety of conditions has been generally well tolerated, although results have been variable as a function of delivery route, and the variability in potency of cells between donors, tissue sources and culture conditions has been well documented.
