COPD Stem Cell Therapy
Learn About COPD & Celltex Stem Cell Therapy
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is a chronic inflammatory lung condition that causes restricted airflow from the lungs. Learn about how Celltex is helping to improve the quality of life of individuals suffering from COPD by using their own stem cells.
Condition Overview
What Is COPD?
When you breathe, air travels down the trachea and into the lungs through two tubes called bronchi, which divide into many smaller tubes that end in tiny air sacs called alveoli. The elastic nature of both the bronchi and alveoli helps to force air out of your body during respiration, but COPD causes them to lose their elasticity, which can trap air in the lungs during exhalation.
By far, the most common cause of COPD is smoking, but respiratory conditions such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis can contribute to COPD.
COPD is quite treatable, and with proper management, most people can gain control over their symptoms and achieve a good quality of life.

How Can Celltex Stem Cell Therapy Help?
Stem cell therapies are actively being explored for COPD because of their ability to modulate the immune system in the alveoli of the lungs to halt damage and promote repair. An example clinical trial (2013) using allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) demonstrated safety of IV infused cells, and certain patients showed a reduction in systemic inflammation markers. Transplantation of MSCs in humans for a variety of conditions has, to date, been generally well tolerated.
The airways of COPD patients exhibit a high-level expression of inflammatory factors. Many immune cells, such as T cells, B cells, natural killer cells and neutrophils, are present in the airway, contributing to mucous hypersecretion, alveolar destruction and emphysema. Injected MSCs home to the injured airways and release multiple anti-inflammatory factors and growth factors. These cytokines inhibit cell apoptosis and cell death and decrease oxidative stress of lung tissues. Some studies have demonstrated that angiopoietin-1 plays an important role in stabilizing endotoxin-induced endothelial fluid leaks and maintaining alveolar-capillary barrier function.
