A team of researchers at University Hospital’s Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospitals are conducting the first ever stem cell trial for cystic fibrosis (CF). Researchers will follow trial participants who receive a single infusion of human mesenchymal stem cells for a year to ensure the safety of the treatment. The goal of the trial is to reduce cystic fibrosis patients’ inflammation and return the lungs to a more normal state, while keeping bacterial proliferation at bay. If this historic trial is proven safe, stem cell therapy may help improve life expectancy for CF patients.
